An ode to Milna's fishermen, written in stone

Antonia Poklepović and Kaća Poklepović Kukoč were kind enough to let us share a story of their father and grandfather, fishermen from Milna, and an ode to them, written forever in the white stone of Brač. Here’s how the story goes:

In the bay of Blaca, on the south side of the island of Brač, in 1986. Antonia’s and Kaća’s father Andro placed a monument (a stone slab in the floor plan of Brač), as a reminder of a beautiful event from 1936, which is described in stone in the dialect of Milna.

The translation reads as follows:

In this bay, 50 years ago, a fisherman from Milna Luka Poklepović, with a group of fishermen in boats called “svićarica”, caught 10,000 kilos of anchovies.

Luke, Antonia’s and Kaća’s nono, marked the place of the happy catch with a small chapel (a niche in stone) in honor of St. Michael and St. Jere, because it all happened in the night between those two saints. It is located, barely noticeable, above the plate.

Both their grandfather and father are sailing in some other seas now, and surely are happy they shared this with all of us. Have you noticed the plate and the chapel? Now you’ll know what to look for, just below a bonsai tree 😉

I really want to visit Brač! How do I do that?!

Brač is an island which can be reached by sea and air. Here are some basics.

BY SEA ///

There are two ferry lines connecting Brač with a land.

First is in Supetar, connecting Brač with Split, and the second is on Sumartin, connecting Brač with Makarska. There is a third port that can be reached by regular local boat lines, and that is Bol, on the south part of the island. Here, you can reach Brač from Split, or from a neighbouring island Hvar. More information about ferry lines and timetables you may find here.

Also, if you own or rent boats, you may just sail into any place on island Brač. We suggest Brač Deluxe for transfers!

BY AIR ///

Brač has its own small airport, situated in the middle of the island. More and more flights are introduced each year, and all the necessary information you may find on the airport’s website. If you need transportation from the airport to any other place on the island, may we suggest contacting some of the #bestofbrac service providers, such as Taxi Peša, Brač DeluxeRent a Motorino or M&B rent. Check them out!

Once you’re on the island, rent a car, use taxis or local transportation. For online booking with discount, click here.
