There’s a cat in the bell tower!

Sutivan, island of Brac

There's a cat in the bell tower!

The story of a cat in the bell tower starts with an octopus. One day, a fisherman caught one and brought it to his wife to cook (octopus, not a cat), and then returned to the fish market to see what other fishermen caught. His wife put the octopus in the pot with a lid and went to buy some onions.

In the meantime, octopus, doing the only sensible thing, of course, removed the lid off the pot, sneaked out the kitchen, and headed to the sea, down the pebbled streets of Sutivan. Halfway to the freedom, the octopus was intersected by a local cat, well trained in surviving as well as stealing skills, feeding off local fishermen’s catch. Seeing her, octopus did the next best thing – started climbing the nearest wall, which ended up being a bell tower! Cat ran after it, up the stairs of the tower, past the priest, arriving at the top ahead of the octopus, circling around to find the best spot to “welcome” its lunch.

At the exact same time, a steamboat was docking into the Sutivan’s harbor and passengers soon noticed the frantic cat running around the bell tower in circles, faster and faster. Someone shouted “Sutivaners! There is a cat in your bell tower!”. Nobody knew what the silly cat was doing, and it all turned into a laughing matter pretty soon. Some Sutivaners were surprised but most amused. And so, the story could have ended there, but it didn’t. The next day, steamboat arrived again and someone started shouting again “Sutivaners! There is a cat in your bell tower!”. But, there was no cat in the tower now, and Sutivaners started to feel a bit angry and mocked about.

This joke continued to go on, one side being pretty amused by the story and the other (Sutivaners) not so much. It all culminated in the stoning of the steamboat, which was historically recorded, stating that some windows as well as heads were broken. As time passed, the story got set aside, but more than 20 years later, the cat reappeared! This time, the cat was a bit more static – being made of stone, that is. It still arouses some tensions between Sutivaners, even though most welcome it with joy. Today, the cat is there to remind them of something which makes them really unique. And recently, this story got a lovely little addition – a girl with a cat looking at the tower.

P.S. You might wonder what happened to the octopus. She never ended up at the top of the tower, so she presumably figured out the trap that’s being laid out for her and she climbed back down and slid unnoticed into the sea, where she had many little octopuses and lived a long and happy life, while Sutivaners was mocked for a frantic cat in a bell tower.

Brač is an island which can be reached by sea and air. Here are some basics.

BY SEA ///

There are two ferry lines connecting Brač with a land.

First is in Supetar, connecting Brač with Split, and the second is on Sumartin, connecting Brač with Makarska. There is a third port that can be reached by regular local boat lines, and that is Bol, on the south part of the island. Here, you can reach Brač from Split, or from a neighbouring island Hvar. More information about ferry lines and timetables you may find here.

Also, if you own or rent boats, you may just sail into any place on island Brač. We suggest Brač Deluxe for transfers!
